Three chickens, five eggs

The days are getting longer in Sydney, and this is having an interesting effect on the chickens. A few days ago I thought I must have been losing the plot as there were 4 eggs in the laying box when we only have 3 chickens. But this has happened 3 times this week now, and on Saturday we got 5 eggs so I did a bit of research and found out that it isn't uncommon for chickens to lay an egg in the morning and another in the afternoon when the daylight hours are longer. They just need lots of protein and grit to stay healthy and produce nice eggs during this time. It probably won't last long....come to think of it, this happened once before (see post here). It does make you wonder about battery hens and what those farmers push their birds to do though. Mine are that productive on an organic, hormone free diet.
